Hillary Clinton & campaign staff on reasons for defeat; FBI Director Comey's October surprise stopped Clinton momentum

Hillary Clinton Blames F.B.I. Director for Election Loss, http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/13/us/politics/hillary-clinton-james-comey.html, Nov. 12th 2016

The above article quotes Clinton as saying to Donors, “There are lots of reasons why an election like this is not successful”..“our analysis is that Comey’s letter raising doubts that were groundless, baseless, proven to be, stopped our momentum.” Clinton also said that the second letter from FBI Director Comey which cleared her, had been even more damaging (perhaps as that was used by Trump campaign to get back into rigged system claims).

The above article states that some donors were of the view that Clinton's campaign did not have a "compelling message for white working-class voters". That, along with her private email server problem and paid speeches to Wall Street, contributed to Clinton's defeat.

In the above document/mail, Navin Nayak of the Clinton campaign writes to senior staff of the campaign that exit polls of early voters showed a preference to Clinton by a 49 to 47 margin. He writes, "But then everything changed in the last week. .. Voters who decided in the last week broke for Trump by a larger margin (42-47). These numbers were even more exaggerated in the key battleground states." Nayak attributes this negative change (from Clinton campaign's perspective) to FBI Director Comey's letter on Clinton's emails being released 11 days before the election, and to drop in turnout on election day among Clinton supporters due to voters seeing record early voting numbers (Ravi: implies that some Clinton supporters may have got complacent about her expected victory and so did not go out to vote for her on election day).

Nayak also says the second letter from Director Comey two days before election day (which stated that nothing new was found to change the July 2016 conclusion of Director Comey), helped to energize Trump supporters (perhaps they claimed that as an indication that the system was rigged!)

A small extract from the above article, "Clinton’s advisers have explained to the stunned candidate that she lost the race of her life in large part due to Comey’s October Surprise — they said their plan of winning college-educated white voters and turning out record levels of Latinos was working until Republican-leaning supporters shifted back to Trump in the wake of Comey’s bombshell letter, 11 days before the election, and the necessary enthusiasm among Latinos and African-Americans could not hold. By the time he released his clearance letter on the Sunday before the election, it was too late to re-energize voters."

Please note that I have a PUBLICLY NEUTRAL informal-student-observer role in these posts that I put up about the USA presidential elections. Of course, as I am an Indian citizen living in India, there is no question of me voting in these elections.
