Very interesting Phil Donahue 1981 interview of Bernard Sanders, then newly elected mayor of Burlington, Vermont, USA

Note: This is NOT a political post in support of Senator Bernie Sanders. I have a PUBLICLY (POLITICALLY) NEUTRAL informal-student-observer role in these posts that I put up about USA politics. Of course, as I am an Indian citizen living in India, there is no question of me having voted in USA elections. I am a well-wisher of the people of the USA.

After I viewed this video, I simply could not skip sharing it with others as a piece of history. Phil Donahue openly shows his surprise at Bernard Sanders, who openly says he is a socialist, becoming mayor of Burlington, Vermont, USA in 1981 - winning by a slim margin of 10 votes from over 9000 votes cast, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electoral_history_of_Bernie_Sanders#1981. He puts in many tough questions to Sanders who answers them without trying to dodge them.

Note that US President then was Ronald Reagan (Republican) who had defeated incumbent President Jimmy Carter (Democrat) in the 1980 presidential elections. Donahue appears shocked that Burlington city in (then) conservative Vermont voted in a socialist as Mayor! He tells Sanders that some of those who supported/voted for him (police officers) in this mayoral election in March 1981 probably voted for Reagan in the presidential election held in Nov. 1980! Donahue's shock and good natured bewilderment at this election result is very apparent in this interview.

I was 18 years old in March 1981 and studying First year B.Sc. in Ruia college, Mumbai! This is nearly 40 years back (38 years to be exact)! But the arguments put forward by newly elected Mayor Sanders in 1981 (at age of around 39) seem to be quite close to that put forward by Senator Sanders now in 2019 (at age of 77)! So I simply could not skip putting up this post.

Bernie Sanders on the Today Show 1981, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OraxqbUjpHw, 7 min 22 secs

A quote of Sanders from the interview that cuts to the chase, "Do I believe that the profit motive is fundamental to human nature? The answer is No. I think the spirit of co-operation - you and I can work together better rather than having to compete against each other and destroy each other".

Note that I am just quoting a key viewpoint of Bernie Sanders. I am not saying anything about whether I agree with the viewpoint or not. I prefer to stay publicly neutral on these matters.
