USA  President Trump: "On the ten-year anniversary of the Mumbai terror attack, the U.S. stands with the people of India in their quest for justice. The attack killed 166 innocents, including six Americans. We will never let terrorists win, or even come close to winning!" My tweet response to him: "Thank you Mr. President of the USA, for your determined fight against terrorists. - From an Indian resident who was born, educated and worked for a living in Mumbai and so loves Mumbai.", https://twitter.com/RaviSaiIyer/status/1067308677189709824

Hon'ble Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis salutes brave police and armed forces personnel who laid down their lives to fight terrorists who attacked Mumbai 10 years ago on 26th Nov. 2008.

As a former resident of Mumbai and outlying areas, I humbly join in this salute towards these brave heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice, in the line of duty to protect Mumbai from the damage becoming worse than what happened.

Don't know whether these allegations are true but I have heard horror stories of this kind in Indian academia

"Indian-Origin Professor in the US Accused of Using Students as Domestic Workers", https://thewire.in/rights/indian-origin-professor-in-the-us-accused-of-using-students-as-domestic-workers, 20th Nov. 2018

Abuse of power by some Professors and some academic administrators in Indian academia is a horrible reality which some students and some junior academics have to face. The worst scenarios typically involve Ph.D. students called grad-students whose careers are largely in the hands of their Ph.D. supervisor/guide, usually a Prof. If the Prof. they work under exploits them then their life can be a very miserable life!

Here are some posts that I had put up on this matter in the past on my Indian academic reform blog:

FB post of mine, https://www.facebook.com/ravi.s.iyer.7/posts/2339715439578353, dated 15th Nov. 2018, shared this post of Embassy of Belgium in New Delhi: https://www.facebook.com/embassybelgiumdelhi/photos/a.475121595916507/1892570094171643/, which had these initial sentences, "Belgium declared its independence from the Netherlands in 1830, and established itself as a constitutional monarchy early 1831.Prince Leopold from the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha took the oath to the Belgian constitution and was crowned as the first King of the Belgians. " The other sentences referred to a Saint Leopold and that Leopold was the name of three former kings of Belgium.

My FB post share comment was as follows:
Interesting history! Thanks. I was not aware of this history of Belgium having been formed as a country after seceding from Netherlands in 1830, which is also mentioned in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgium.

The name Leopold is familiar from my 15 month stay in Brussels, Belgium in the 1980s but I did not know this history associated with that name. Just looked up https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopold_III,_Margrave_of_Austria which seems to correspond to Saint Leopold mentioned in the post. Interesting again!

FB post of mine, https://www.facebook.com/ravi.s.iyer.7/posts/2336538769896020, dated 12th Nov. 2018 shared this video of USA Senator Bernie Sanders titled, "College: 1980s vs now": https://www.facebook.com/senatorsanders/videos/292551961355008/ . I wrote the following introductory share comment:

This college debt issue ***infuriates*** me like perhaps no other issue plaguing society today. India is getting into the same trap. I think the higher education field needs a major reform both in USA and India. I have blogged extensively about reforming higher education in India in the Computer Science and Information Technology field (some of which would apply to other fields too) here: https://eklavyasai.blogspot.com/p/table-of-contents.html . But I have not been able to make any impact on the higher education system in India. .... We are messing up with the lives of the next generation of educated workforce with this terrible student debt problem and a higher education system that, in general (there are exceptions, of course), does a woefully poor job of equipping the passed out graduates with the required skill sets to get a well paid job and career.

A two to three day old video published by Guardian News of around a minute which shows what grave danger many people who were trapped in the California fires, had to drive through to get to safety (like in this case). This is not happening to some film stunts people who may be trained to cope with such matters, but to ordinary folks! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtwutlbJQqI

I saw this ABC News video about these fires: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWyeJg-sQdY . I am utterly shocked. The suspected cause for the N. California fire is a power utility experiencing some problem! I can't wrap my head around that. I mean, I know that California is a very dry place where fires can catch and spread very quickly. But this video is just too much to digest. There must be some solutions which will prevent a fire from becoming such an inferno! Last year too, California suffered and suffered badly - I remember viewing some videos of that. But this one seems to be much worse!

Stay safe Martin. My prayers to God to help keep you and family safe, and to help those who are suffering due to these really terrifying fires.

Sad but I think it is the truth. Many Indian cities need to really do something big to combat this pollution problem.

Hate to say this at a time of great tragedy in the mass shooting in California. But I think it has to be said.

From https://www.foxnews.com/us/high-school-coach-says-california-bar-gunman-assaulted-her-10-years-ago-he-attacked-me

"She claims she had run-ins with then-sprinter Long that convinced her that he was “mentally disturbed” and had “anger issues” before he left to join the U.S. Marine Corps."

Ravi: Anger issues + becoming an Army officer and mastering usage of guns and explosives to kill enemy-people + civilian life after quitting army not working out well + Having guns & ammo = Recipe for disaster.

One of the most dangerous set of persons are ex armed forces people who are struggling in civilian life, have guns & ammo and have explosive anger problems. I think this is the case worldwide. Managing to accommodate and settle ex armed forces people in civilian life is very important for ensuring a safe civil society. I think this is true not only in USA but in India too.

In an FB post somewhere, I (Ravi S. Iyer) wrote on 9th Nov. 2018:
I think Harry S. Truman's contributions to the extraordinary post World War II era without any major wars between major powers, and which has led to extraordinary prosperity and growth in many parts of the world, including India, has not been well recognized, at least in India. A few months ago I came to know more about this great man's contributions, despite the various challenges and taunts that he faced as he became USA President on death of Franklin Roosevelt. I put up some posts based on some limited info. I got on the Internet.

I hope to buy and read his memoirs. I mean, my generation of people in many countries of the world, including India, have a lot to be thankful to this man who had extraordinary burdens thrust upon him and for which he was quite unprepared. How he rose to the challenge, despite great obstacles, and did such a great job of leading the laying of the foundation for seven decades of peace in most parts of the world, including India to a large extent, is truly inspiring. I am sure I will get more inspired by reading his memoirs.

It's a story of a good man and a humble man who became the most powerful man in the world! And when his term got over, he went back to his earlier simple life! A great hero for people like me!
