NDTV article: US Sanctions Won't Impact India-Russia Defence Ties: Nirmala Sitharaman; I support Indian govt. stand on maintaining good relations with Russia
US Sanctions Won't Impact India-Russia Defence Ties: Nirmala Sitharaman, https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/us-sanctions-wont-impact-india-russia-defence-ties-nirmala-sitharaman-1917828, 17th Sept. 2018
A short extract from it:
"Ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin's India visit next month, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has clearly indicated that India will not allow its time-tested defence and security ties with Russia to be impacted by the US sanctions on military transactions with Moscow."
The article quotes Indian Defence minister Sitharaman as saying, "India has maintained its sovereignty as regards to its relationship with countries. We shall maintain it in all earnestness".
Ravi: As an Indian citizen based in India, I fully support the stand of the Indian govt. as expressed in above extract and quote. As I have publicly written in the past, on multiple occasions, Russia/ former USSR has supported independent India (after India freed itself from British colonial rule in 1947) for decades. As an Indian citizen, I am grateful to Russia/ former USSR for that great help and support rendered, and I think India as a country should not forget this great help and support rendered by Russia/former USSR over decades.
So India's friendship and good relations with Russia should be maintained, and improved.
India should also improve its relations with USA. But if USA puts down conditions of India moving away from its decades long friendship with Russia then India should be willing to move back from closer ties with the USA.
USA ****should NOT**** dictate to India about India's ties to Russia, thereby interfering with sovereignty of India. If USA imposes sanctions on India for its relations with Russia (including buying defense equipment from Russia) then so be it. Sanctions threat from USA should not be allowed to interfere with India's good relations with Russia.
