'CNN Special Report: Killing John Lennon (2015)' gives some views on twisted and wrong notions which led Chapman to kill Lennon (in 1980)

Saw this video: CNN Special Report: Killing John Lennon (2015), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kF-pLQ2VCY, around 42 mins.

While some of the earlier videos and reports mentioned in an earlier post on this topic (Video and article links related to the tragic killing of Western pop music icon John Lennon in 1980, http://ravisiyermisc.blogspot.com/2018/07/video-and-article-links-related-to.html) also suggested this possibility as the twisted and very wrong notions due to which Mark David Chapman (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_David_Chapman) killed John Lennon, this one gives more details on it. So I felt it appropriate to share these twisted and very wrong notions of Chapman. I mean, this is the reality of the world in which we live. People idolize celebrities and then sometimes become their murderous enemy based on some twisted notions. I think it is appropriate to know these truths of human society and so am providing those twisted and wrong notions of Mark David Chapman below.

Covered in video from 10:25 mins to 11:23 mins in the video: Chapman was a Beatles fan when he was young. He also experimented with LSD. Later he took to Christian religion in a deep way.

Around 11:57 "... Chapman discovered an old quote by John Lennon famously proclaiming the Beatles more popular than Jesus" "He [Chapman] was very mad about it and would not listen to Beatles records anymore and he destroyed all of his record albums. [He] even said he changed the words to Imagine (song) to say Imagine if John were dead".

"Chapman's anger would get the best of him. A couple of years later he rejected religion, dropped out of college, dumped his girlfriend and moved to Hawaii. Adrift and alone he attempted suicide by hooking a hose up to his exhaust pipe and sticking it in his car window." [This suicide attempt failed due to intervention by others to save Chapman.]

Around 14:00 [Voiceover:] ".. many days were spent at the library obsessed with the cult classic, 'Catcher in the Rye' and its main character Holden Caulfield."

[Mark David Chapman's words:] "I really identified with him - his plight, his loneliness, his alienation in society."

[Voiceover:] "and Holden's fixation with people being fake".

[Mark David Chapman's words:] "Well, it was during that time that I read the book about Lennon and read 'The Catcher'. Then it just all melted into one. Holden and John Lennon."

[Voiceover:] "Chapman began to see Lennon as a phony - a man who sang about a perfect world with no possessions" - [Words of Lennon's Imagine song:] "Imagine no possessions" - [Voiceover:] "yet was also rich and extraordinarily privileged."

[Mark David Chapman's words:] "I believe that I turned all my anger about what had happened to me on Lennon. I saw him being a phony and them [fans of John Lennon] buying it. People buying it."

[Voiceover/Other interviewee:] "He was Holden Caulfield - 'The Catcher in the Rye' and 'The Catcher in the Rye' catches children before they are corrupted by life. He put himself in the position of being the person who would save the world from the corruption of John Lennon and in Chapman's mind there was only one way to do that."

Ravi: I repeat that the above simply captures the video's view of the twisted and wrong notions that Mark David Chapman had about John Lennon, which the video says played a significant role in Chapman's decision and deadly deed of killing John Lennon.

By no means do I (Ravi) agree with the above twisted and wrong notions of Chapman. The purpose of putting up this transcript snippet is just to share how some people get trapped into twisted and wrong notions about celebrities. I think celebrities need to protect themselves from such crazy people, using appropriate security measures.

John Lennon had no security. That was what allowed this crazed killer, Chapman, to easily kill John Lennon thereby depriving the world of decades of extraordinary music that John Lennon may have produced. It was a terrible tragedy.

[I thank CNN Special Report and have presumed that they will not have any objections to me sharing the above transcript snippet from their above mentioned video, on this post which is freely viewable by all, and does not have any financial profit motive whatsoever.]
