Bandidos: 1967 Spaghetti Western movie about good guy expert gunman teacher's dogged resolve to finish off brilliant gunman-student-turned-bandit, even after having his palms shot through, by training another student gunman

Movie's wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandidos_(film) . It is a 1967 Italian and Spanish co-production movie.

I liked some of the dialogues in this movie. Of course, the spaghetti movie is NOT realistic. So one has to leave one's critical faculty a little aside and go with the flow and drama of the movie, knowing it is fictional (make-believe).

I have given below related key parts of the movie story:

The movie's opening scene is a very gory train robbery and massacre of almost all of its passengers & crew by bandits led by Billy Kane. There are two groups in the bandits - one is Billy Kane's group and another is Vigonza's group but with Vigonza and group accepting Billy Kane's leadership when they are jointly attacking, robbing and committing the massacre in the train.

After the initial gun battle between the bandits and the train crew which the bandits win, the bandits face resistance from one gunman in the train (from around 6 min 52 secs in the video). From the precise and effective shooting of the gunman which kills quite a few of the bandits, Billy Kane guesses that the gunman is his former gunman teacher, Richard Martin. Richard Martin makes his livelihood by exhibiting his gunman skills at shows that he runs - so a legal way of making money using his marksmanship skills.

At around 8 min 34 secs in the video, Billy Kane calls out Martin, after having got the bandits to stop shooting. He asks Martin to come out and says that he is Billy Kane.

Then Kane says (to Martin): "They told me you were looking for me. Well, here's your chance. My men won't shoot. Come out." The implication seems to be that Martin is on the lookout for Billy Kane and wants to have a gun duel with him as a way to stop Billy Kane's bandit career. Billy Kane is hard to catch as his shooting is too good. It is later revealed that Martin feels somewhat responsible for Billy Kane's horrific crimes (robbery with murder) as he was Billy Kane's shooting skills teacher, and so wants to confront Billy Kane in a gun duel where he puts an end to Kane's bandit career (perhaps by disarming him and turning him over to the law or ...).

Martin comes out of the train and makes some sarcastic comments about the company that Kane has got into.

Martin then tells Kane, "Kill me Billy, or by God I'll kill you, believe me."

Kane says, "I'm afraid you'll lose."

In the gun duel, before Martin is able to get his gun out of his holster, Kane shoots down Martin's holster containing his gun, which falls to the ground.

The student Kane is way better now than his teacher Martin, and the student gives his teacher a sardonic look.

Either Kane or one of his guys, mocks Martin, saying "Scared, teacher".

Martin is composed and says, "You better kill me, Billy, but do it quick. For your own good."

Kane says, "I guess I'd better because only beginners leave witnesses. I never do, ain't wise. I don't like to have my picture up on walls and have people shoot me in the back to get a reward."

As Kane does not immediately kill him, Martin says, "What's the matter? You are trying to find an excuse to kill me?"

Martin is pushed against the train with his palms up on the train side. Martin says, "You know damn well you don't have to shoot me down to stop me from talking. You're afraid. Sooner or later I'll get you."

Perhaps Martin's words indicating that he will not reveal that Kane was behind the massacre, and Martin's challenge to Kane that if he does not kill Martin, Martin will 'get him', leads Kane to not kill Martin but only shoot two bullets at both of Martin's palms.

As Martin falls down with agony due to his palms being shot, Kane says to him, "You can get me any day you want to if you can still hold a gun."

As the bandits disperse after the robbery and massacre, Kane orders Vigonza to stay in the area with his men, risking arrest by lawmen, which Vigonza does not like but has to accept. Kane and group move away, presumably across the Texas border into Mexico.

The movie then shifts to some years later. Martin is shown as a gun exhibition owner and main host, who has a young gunman exhibiting his skills. The gunman is killed by some bad guy who sort-of challenges him (giving him very little time to react) and then shoots him.

Martin becomes desperate with fury and confronts the killer and his friends. But with his palms being weak and incapable of holding a gun, he is no match for the killer and his friends. The killer puts aside his gun belt and gets into a fist fight with Martin where Martin lands some punches, kicks and bodyslams but overall gets beaten by the killer assisted by his friends. A guy in the saloon where this fight is going on, comes to Martin's aid and helps beat up the killer and his friends.

Martin takes the guy who helped him as his new gunman for his exhibition. This guy turns out to be an escaped convict but Martin is OK with that, as Martin wants to train him to be an expert gunman and eventually kill Billy Kane for him. This guy takes on the name of Ricky Shot. Meanwhile Billy Kane wanted posters are going around with attractive rewards which Martin views as a sign that Billy Kane is coming back to those parts (in Texas).

Kane's men turn on him, and side with Vigonza, who is well off now as an outlaw boss, and now wants to kill Kane when Kane comes to the area.

Meanwhile Ricky whose shooting skills have improved greatly under Martin's tutelage (teaching), shows signs that he has his own agenda in this matter. He reveals that he was arrested with the false charge of participating in the train robbery & massacre, as his knife was found in a murdered train staffer. But Ricky had been thrown off the train before the robbery & massacre as he was traveling without a ticket, and his saddle was confiscated by the train staff with the knife being in the saddle. This knife was used by one of the bandits to kill a train staffer which then results in Ricky being convicted and imprisoned.

Ricky wants to forcefully take a member of the bandits gang and get him to confess the robbery & murder to the sheriff, which will then make Ricky a free man who could go back to his folks' ranch and lead a normal life.

The dialogues related to the above are around 45 mins 42 secs in the video.

Ricky: Hey, Martin! Martin, show me how to use this.

Martin: You're learnin' how to shoot with a dueling pistol. What do you want with a six shooter?

Ricky: To get the men who robbed the train.

Martin: So that's what was really on your mind, to use me. They're the only ones who can give testimony and you're hoping I'll lead you to them.

Ricky: You're no better than I am. You want to use me to kill Billy Kane! Tehuantepec's the place where you'll find him.

Martin: Get that out of your head! You're not ready for Billy Kane yet. He'd put all 6 shots in you before you could reach for your gun.

----

Martin continues to teach Ricky to shoot even after the above exchange.

The movie progresses to the showdown between Billy Kane and Vigonza in a saloon, with Ricky being roped in by Vigonza in a plot to kill Kane where Ricky will talk to Kane and signal Vigonza and his men who will be in the saloon with most being hidden, who will all fire on Kane. Kane may be fast on the draw but six or more people firing on him at the same time, from unexpected places, would kill Kane, even if he managed to kill a few of the people firing on him.

But Ricky turns the tables on Vignoza by spilling the plan to Kane, and teams up with Kane to kill Vigonza and his men.

Afterwards Ricky tells Kane that he wants one of his men to go with him and confess to the crime. Kane agrees to organize that.

The movie then shows Martin who has been watching (and hearing) all this. Martin says to a saloon entertainment and manager kind of lady, Betty Starr, who is an old friend of Martin and had become a friend of Ricky too, at around 1 hr 3 mins in the video, "I counted on him (Ricky) to get Billy Kane for me. I thought he was gonna do it, too". Betty says, "But he had his own reasons to act the way he did". Martin just says, "Ya." and moves away.

Kane and Ricky get to the place where Kane's men, who had turned on Kane, are staying. After having shot one of the gang members who was at the saloon and who was trying to come to this place to warn the others, Kane enters the room with Ricky. Kane's gang members are petrified. Nobody wants to fight Kane now.

After a rather elaborate but dramatic sequence to choose one gang member to go with Ricky and confess to the train robbery & massacre crime, at the point of a gun, Kane forces one of his gang members at gunpoint to go with Ricky. This person is disarmed.

[At 68 mins. 45 secs:] Kane tells Ricky: "Here's your man."

Ricky puts a sort-of handcuff on him and is ready to lead him out.

Kane says to Ricky: "Now we are even, right?"

Ricky nods his assent.

The movie shows Martin practising shooting with a rifle. As he is not able to shoot well, he gets the idea of sawing off part of the barrel of the rifle and tries again. This time his aim is far better.

Meanwhile Ricky along with his prisoner rides up to Martin's wagon. The dialogues then are:

At 71:54: Ricky (to Martin): Was that you shooting?

Martin: Yeah, A coyote. [It is a lie to cover up his real intention.]

Ricky: This is Nuno [referring to the gang member who is now his prisoner].

Martin: I know him.

Ricky: Martin, I better tell you something. I was on that train, too.

Martin: So I've been told. When (are) you planning on going?.

Ricky: At dawn. As soon as I've turned him into the sheriff, I'm going back to my folks' ranch. Martin, why don't you come with me?

Martin: I don't fit into bedroom slippers, I've tried 'em. I'll stick to my old boots.

Ricky: You've been a good teacher.

Martin: A good teacher doesn't teach you how to kill a man. You could have been killed tonight!

Ricky: It never crossed my mind to face him [referring to Billy Kane]. It's a private fight between the two of you. See you tomorrow.

Martin: No, Ricky. I guess we'd better just forget about it.

----

Ricky telling Martin that he does not want to get involved in fighting Kane, as that fight is a private fight between Kane and Martin, is a telling moment in the movie, though the events leading up to this dialogue exchange pretty much show that Rikcy is not interested in challenging Kane. Still, Ricky telling Martin that makes his stand very clear. Martin is on his own when it comes to challenging or killing Kane.

Later, at dawn I guess, Ricky is ready to go with his prisoner (to the sheriff). Before leaving he calls out Martin. On getting no response he looks into Martin's wagon but does not find him there. As Ricky places the saddle on his horse, he sees the sawed off barrel piece on the ground. He picks it up and examines it closely.

The scene shifts to outside a saloon where Kane's gang are getting ready to commit a robbery. His men go into the town marshal's office and kill him. Then one of Kane's men walks into the saloon saying, "Billy, we're ready." Some men walk down the stairs of the first floor of the saloon coming into the ground floor area of the saloon.

Martin is shown with his rifle with sawn off barrel, in a corner from where he has clear view of the staircase.

Martin says [at 75:47]: Here I am, Billy Kane.

Martin then fires his gun killing a man on the staircase.

Martin walks out of his corner towards the man he shot, who has fallen down the stairs. Martin fires at Kane's men who come to the entrance of the saloon from the street, forcing them to back off. Martin then turns over the body of the man to see his face and finds that it is not Billy Kane!

A largish gold coin is thrown near Martin. Martin looks up the stairs and sees Billy Kane standing above (either on the staircase landing or on the first floor).

At 76:26, Kane says: Those good old days were long ago, Martin. You can't even see, much less hold a gun. Load your gun, Go ahead.

Martin loads his gun while Kane comes down the stairs. But then realizes it is no use. He throws away his gun at the feet of Kane, and turns his back on Kane. Martin then attempts to fill a glass of liquor at which time Kane shoots him in the back. Martin slowly collapses to the floor, presumably dead. Kane walks out of the saloon to join his men.

As Kane walks down the empty street with his men, his gang member says that some of the townsfolk are behind the windows of their homes but that they don't have the guts to fire at them. Kane says there is always some hothead wherever you go.

Somebody then fires and one of Kane's men go down. There is a gun battle with some other men too firing at Kane's men. But Kane and his men are able to kill most of these persons. There is silence for some time as Kane walks on the street warily.

Around 80 mins 35 secs, Kane says, "Guess that's the end of the heroes".

Then Kane and his men break into the bank.

Meanwhile Ricky and his prisoner ride across the end of the street with one of Kane's men who is the lookout, spotting them and drawing his gun. But by then they have ridden across the end of the street and are no longer in sight.

Kane and his men loot the bank.

Meanwhile Ricky is at the saloon speaking to Betty, in front of Martin's dead body. Ricky is having the largish gold coin that Kane had thrown at Martin earlier, in his hand.

[At 81:39] Betty says: He finally caught up with Billy Kane.

Ricky: Why did he have to do it?

Betty: Every time Billy shot somebody, it was like he was pulling the trigger instead.

Ricky reads the inscription on the largish gold coin: Top gun Richard Martin - Billy Kane, shooting competition, Dallas county fair 1876.

Betty: They won it when they were giving shows together. They were really something. Then Billy got the idea he could do better robbing trains and banks. So he left him.

Ricky: Guess they were pretty good friends.

Betty: They were almost brothers. Martin taught him everything about shooting. For him, it was his duty to go off and put an end to him.

[Ricky picks up Martin's rifle and starts to go out of the saloon.]

Betty: Forget about it, Ricky, or I'll have lost you both!

...

Ricky uses his prisoner, one of Kane's men called Nuno, to call Kane out and get him, with Nuno (falsely) saying that he has killed Ricky and is wounded. Kane sees through the matter, and understands that Ricky is trying to lay a trap for him. Kane understands that Ricky wants to kill him.

Kane warily goes up to Nuno and finds that Ricky is not around. Kane kills Nuno.

Meanwhile Ricky comes out on the street and surprises Kane's men, killing two or three of them.

Then it is a showdown between Ricky and Kane. They are facing each other on the street but at quite some distance from each other (more than the typical gun duel distance).

[At 85:46] Kane tells Ricky: You're not too smart! You should have gone, while the goin' was good. Hey, Ricky! It's too bad! No one to prove your innocence. You shouldn't have come back!

[Then Kane turns his back to Ricky:] But fellows like you wanna die, wanna be a hero!

Kane turns around suddenly and simultaneous fires at where Ricky was standing but finds Ricky is not there! Kane immediately moves away from the open street. Ricky has moved into a corner and fires at Kane from behind some cover.

Then Kane fires into a bucket with water and says that when the water stops coming out of the holes in the bucket, they both will come out firing. But Ricky does not fall for this challenge (and Kane does not come out firing when the water stops flowing out of the bucket holes).

[At 87:27] Kane says: What's wrong?.

Ricky: Think I'd believe you'd stick by your word?.

Kane: You really want to get killed, don't you?. Alright, I'll fix you up.

...

The final shootout is in what seems to be a warehouse/store-room.

[At 90:41] Kane says: You think I can't get rid of you whenever I want?. Do you hear me?

From his position (behind some cover), Kane fires at a chessboard knocking off only one piece from the board (supposedly the king) and says: Did you ever see anybody get rid of the king, as clean as that without touchin' the other pieces?

Ricky responds by shooting off some of the other pieces on the board, one by one, demonstrating that he too has such skills and then says (at 91:13): I was Martin's pupil, too. I know all his tricks. He taught 'em to me to kill you, Billy Kane.

...

The shootout continues.

Eventually, Kane fires at Ricky's image in a mirror thinking it is Ricky, while Ricky is some distance away and is able to shoot Kane dead. Then [around 93:22:] Ricky says: Just to kill you, Billy Kane.

The film ends with Betty telling Ricky whose real name is Philip Raymond that she will tell the sheriff that Philip Raymond was killed by a man called Ricky Shot! The implication is that this will help Ricky with Philip Raymond no longer being a wanted escaped convict. Note that Ricky has lost all possibility of getting witnesses to the train robbery which will declare him innocent of the crime that he was convicted of (falsely).

The really nice part of the movie is when Ricky's gratitude to his teacher, Martin, leads him to check on Martin by coming to the town, rather than proceed to meet the sheriff (in another town, presumably) with his prisoner, Nuno, and establish his innocence in the crime he has been falsely convicted of. And once Ricky finds that Martin was killed by Kane, his gratitude to his teacher Martin, makes him challenge Kane, and eventually kill him.

The Kane character comes across as a very dangerous and sardonic bad guy with no scruples at all - superb portrayal by the Italian actor, Venantino Venantini. The roles of Martin played by Italian actor, Enrico Maria Salerno, and Ricky played by British/American actor Terry Jenkins, have also been done very well.
