The tragic news makes it to CNN: Indian coffee tycoon V.G. Siddhartha found dead, https://edition.cnn.com/2019/07/31/business/ccd-founder-body-found-siddhartha/index.html

What I find difficult to understand is why could he not just declare bankruptcy? I do not know much about Indian bankruptcy laws but I guess that at the most your debtors can go for your assets mortgaged for loans (which they can go after, even if a person commits suicide, I guess).

Was it then an issue of facing up to business failure? Losing face with friends & family? I don't know.

Or was it loan sharks (unofficial lenders) threatening him? If that was the case, then it is really tragic and horrifying.

Prayers to God to give strength to his family to bear the loss. I read about one son being heart broken. Don't know how many children he has.

Tech. employees/contractors doing acts of cyber-sabotage are, very unfortunately, not unknown. Some times it is to have the company be dependent on them to fix the cyber-problems that the cyber-sabotage creates! But, in the USA at least, such actions could lead to jail time!

In response to a comment, I wrote (slightly edited):  --Name-snipped-- - Capitalism sure has its great defects. But socialism without free market economy and communism as practised in some countries have had and continue to have great defects too. Note that Scandinavian socialism is with a free market (and so has capitalism via its companies).

In theory, companies must be held accountable by the government. But the sheer money power that companies have, makes it not an easy proposition to hold companies accountable. ... But, at least in USA, some CEOs landed in jail (e.g. Enron CEO).

Regarding unsustainable development, each of us needs to do whatever he/she can within our limitations, to contribute to reversing unsustainable development to sustainable development. That's the approach I prefer. I mean, that way even if the world goes downhill from a sustainability point of view, at least we will have done whatever we could to resist that slide, within the limitations that each of us have.

Fear perhaps is one of the most common and perhaps the most important emotion to understand how groups of people act (or not act).

I recall Alistair Maclean's famous book - Fear is the Key, though I have forgotten the plot of the book. But I recall the title very easily.

I wonder whether James Hadley Chase had a book title on those lines. He was a prolific writer who wrote about the nasty and tough aspects of life. One book title of his which I will never forget is: The Vulture is a Patient Bird.

Karnataka Crisis: Ahead Of Trust Vote Tomorrow, "Balanced" Verdict From Supreme Court. https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/karnataka-speaker-free-to-decide-on-rebel-lawmakers-resignations-says-supreme-court-2070800

As per my understanding of NDTV article, the key directives of Supreme Court in Karnataka matter are:

1. Rebel MLAs (15) should not be compelled to participate in state assembly. That is interpreted by some that they can go against any whip issued by their current party to participate in the trust vote, and not be penalized for it.

2. Speaker is given time to decide on resignations and disqualifications.
----

Speaker K.R. Ramesh Kumar is reported as saying, "The Supreme Court has put extra burden on me. I will conduct myself responsibly in accordance with Constitutional principle".

The opposition leader B.S. Yedyurappa is reported as saying, it "is a victory of the Constitution and democracy, a moral victory for the rebel MLAs. It is an interim order and in future the Supreme Court will ponder over the powers of the Speaker and set a new trend in parliamentary democracy".

Ravi: It will be good if there is clarity in how such matters are handled in future. For sure, there will be repeats of this kind of rebellion of ruling party MLAs in future too, in some state or the other in India.

The floor test (trust vote) is tomorrow (Thursday).

Oh! The umpires seem to have tripped up on a detail of the laws of cricket here. "If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the wilful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be".."and the runs completed by the batsmen, together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant of the throw or act."

At the instant of the throw, only 1 run had been completed. So England should have got 5 runs instead of 6, goes the argument.

Hmm.

Can New Zealand go to court on this one? :-) . Perhaps they can. But would that be cricket? Perhaps not.

Sad to see this. But it is a reality of India. The girl is a daughter of an MLA (elected state politician from North India) who chose to marry a Dalit (supposedly lower-caste) man. The girl's family seems to be dead against the marriage and the couple says that they are being threatened. The matter is scheduled for a court hearing in the near future, and the girl is requesting that arrangements be made that the couple are able to reach the court safely.

My view on the matter, as an Indian citizen and resident, is that the couple are adults and chose to marry. That's it. Discussion over. Any threat of violence from the girl's family towards the couple must be tackled strictly by law enforcement.

While I am following USA 2020 political campaign stuff, off and on, I don't usually say anything publicly on it, as the environment is very divisive right now, and what I say may get misunderstood and misinterpreted.

But I could not hold off from commenting on billionaire Tom Steyer entering the Democratic Party nomination for president race.

Whether it is USA or India, if you are running for a big position, you need to have soooooolid money backing. Steyer is a billionaire himself, so money may not be so much of an issue.

Billionaire Steyer vs. billionaire Trump - is that what this may become in the final stages of the 2020 presidential election? Note that Steyer claims to know the USA economy much better than regular politicians. Trump ran, at least partly, on jobs and economy promises, asking for a chance to make USA rich (implying that Americans (USA citizens) will become rich), like he made himself rich. Steyer may make similar promises based on the big money that he has made for himself.

England virtually knock Pakistan out of World Cup, https://www.thenews.com.pk/latest/493243-england-vs-new-zealand-live-score-icc-world-cup-2019

A small extract from it: "Despite England’s huge win [Ravi: over New Zealand], Pakistan will still need to defeat Bangladesh by 316 runs in their last group game on July 5 at Lord’s in order to qualify for the semi-finals.

This means that if Pakistan manages to pile up 400 against Bangladesh they will need to bowl out the opposition for a mere 84 in order to make it to the last four."

Very good to see this report where PM Modi has pulled up a Madhya Pradesh MLA (and son of BJP leader) for his atrocious act of threatening and somewhat mildly hitting a municipal official with a cricket bat on his leg. The MLA is reported to have said in Hindi, "Pehle aavedan, phir nivedan aur phir danadan" which translates in this context to 'First request, then request (again) and then violent attack'.

We also recently saw a video of a forest officer lady in Telangana being beaten by a stick by a mob led by a political leader (not of BJP but of some other party), https://www.theweek.in/news/india/2019/06/30/video-shows-trs-mlas-brother-beating-woman-forest-officer-with-a-stick.html.

No matter which political party is involved, any elected politician or his close relatives engaging in violence against government officials must be roundly condemned and the associated political party should take action against the concerned elected politician.

Please note that I have a PUBLICLY POLITICALLY NEUTRAL role in these social media posts that I put up related to Indian political leaders which may include leaders in government currently and those not in government. I am an Indian citizen and resident of India. I do vote in Indian elections but I keep who I vote for as a private matter. I should also say that I am a beneficiary, a lover and an open supporter of democracy in India.

Good to see Andhra Pradesh High Court getting involved in ensuring proper security for former A.P. Chief Minister Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu: No reduction in Naidu’s security, A-G tells HC, https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/andhra-pradesh/no-reduction-in-naidus-security-a-g-tells-hc/article28265621.ece, 3rd July 2019.

Current A.P. CM Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has the responsibility to ensure proper security for A.P. Opposition Leader  and former CM Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu. The honourable High Court should ensure that current CM carries out this responsibility properly.

Please note that I have a PUBLICLY POLITICALLY NEUTRAL role in these social media posts about Andhra Pradesh politics. I am not a supporter of any particular political party in Andhra Pradesh. Please note that I have been living in Andhra Pradesh since Oct. 2002, and so am a voter in Andhra Pradesh. I should also say that I am a beneficiary, a lover and an open supporter of democracy in Andhra Pradesh and in India.

Enjoyed these beautiful pics of Mumbai under rains. Brought back lots of memories of life during rainy season in Mumbai. I loved the rains in Mumbai and the great sights one could see then, especially the greenery that would sprout. Water is life! No water, no life!

USA Secretary Pompeo's remarks on India Policy, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meJYScw7_Ks, 14 min. 44 secs, published by U.S. Department of State on 27th June 2019 (the speech was on 26th June 2019 in New Delhi, India).

The parts of US Secretary of State Pompeo's remarks dealing with countries other than USA and India, are way beyond my social media writer grade, and so no comments on that. I was very happy to hear the rest of Secy. Pompeo's speech and am very supportive of it. As and when I get time, I plan to share text extracts from this speech not related to foreign policy of USA with respect to countries other than India.
