My May 2020 FB posts and comments on novel coronavirus 2019 (SARS-CoV-2) / COVID-19

Given below are contents of most of my posts in May 2020 on the novel (new) coronavirus 2019 (SARS-CoV-2) with associated disease labelled as COVID-19 by WHO. Some posts have been put up as as separate posts by itself. Their contents are not included in this post.

To save time, I am usually not providing my FB post links but only contents. I am also not hyperlinking links usually. So readers will typically have to copy-paste links from this post onto a browser link box and then browse to that link.

[Initially, I am only capturing comments I have made on posts of others]

On a non-public FB post & comment, the following articles were shared:

Fact-checking ‘Plandemic’: A documentary full of false conspiracy theories about the coronavirus, https://www.politifact.com/article/2020/may/08/fact-checking-plandemic-documentary-full-false-con/ , 7th May 2020.

I commented as follows (slightly edited) on the post:

Thank you so much --name-snipped-- for sharing these fact-checker articles. I had seen the Plandemic video yesterday evening as there was so much news about it, perhaps partly because it was being taken down from social media sites.

My view then was that it may be better if her key claims are debunked by more knowledgeable people. Perhaps there is some truth to what she says as usually these things are grey and not black and white.

But some of the shocking claims related to current COVID-19 pandemic were very concerning - like wearing face masks makes it worse, that Italy's large number of cases was related to a flu vaccine that many there took, that Dr. Fauci has a conflict of interest as he profits from patents, that (as per Dr. Mikovitz) SARS-CoV-2 ***surely*** came from a lab (not created there but I think she implied that some natural virus was enhanced in some way in a lab resulting in SARS-CoV-2) etc.

I am so happy to see these claims being disputed by these fact-checker articles. That's how the truth emerges in such contentious matters.

It will be really great if some major TV network has an interview with Dr. Mikovitz where she is challenged by the host about these claims which have been disputed by fact checkers. We can then see how Dr. Mikovitz responds to these challenges.

Dr. Mikovitz should be allowed to have her say unless what she says is held as maliciously false and defamatory by a USA court of law. Barring anything that is deemed as maliciously false I think her voice should not be supressed. If she is making false claims about SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19, she should be challenged by more knowledgeable people, and her false claims should be exposed. That's the way that the truth gets established, IMHO.

So thanks again for sharing these valuable fact-checker articles.

I wondered whether I should publicly post about the video and these fact-checker articles you have provided. But I think doing so will drag me into a very contentious area and may suck a lot of my energy and time. I am not willing to risk that for this matter, as of now at least.

Middle-class Americans queue at food banks as US unemployment hits 38 million - BBC News, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWT9aOE0OGo, 4 min. 9 secs, 22nd May 2020.

Towards the end of the video, the voice-over says: "This is a convulsion that is shifting the ground beneath our feet, a disruption of immense historical scale bigger than the Great Recession, more consequential than 9/11."

Ravi: What a horrible thing this COVID-19 pandemic has become! Now the economic pain is hurting the middle classes. My prayers to Almighty God to help the world quickly recover from this pandemic, and let people get back to normal life where they can work hard, earn their livelihoods and provide for their families.

"The coronavirus pandemic has devastated Hertz by grounding business travelers and tourists, making it impossible for the company to continue paying its lenders. A sharp drop in used car prices has also decreased the value of its fleet."

Very sad to see this famous company, which was a top brand during my travelling days in 1980s and early 1990s, go bankrupt! If I recall correctly, an Indian friend and I who were in the USA East Coast in late 1980s, rented a Hertz car for a week we spent sight-seeing in California. We had organized the Hertz car (probably at some Hertz outlet near Boston/New York City, and probably pre-paid), flown to LA from Boston or New York City (I don't recall which city clearly), at which time the car was ready at the airport! We were amazed at such, then in the late 1980s for us Indians, fantastic organization level of Hertz in the USA. And the car served us well in our sight-seeing trips mainly in L.A., San Francisco, some city in Silicon Valley where a friend was based (I think it was San Jose or some other place nearby), and San Diego. We dropped off the car at the airport once our sight-seeing trip was over, and flew back to India either from LA or after first flying to the East Coast (I don't recall that clearly). How convenient and useful the Hertz rented car was for my friend and me to freely and comfortably travel over the parts of California that we wanted to visit!

So I am very sad to see Hertz company in USA, get into bankruptcy! What a terrible economic disaster this COVID-19 pandemic has become!
-----------------

P.S. As I think more about it, I am a little confused whether we rented a Hertz car or Avis car. We probably would have rented whatever was cheaper (we were budget tourists :-) ). But Hertz was clearly the big brand then in rented cars.

Primary way of COVID-19 spread is through close contact with infected persons; Spread via contaminated surfaces is possible but not the main way of spread

I am putting up this post as I think that learning to live with coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is striking a balance between taking precautions and doing necessary work/activities. Proper information is vital to know what precautions one must take and which are high-risk actions.

[USA] CDC now says coronavirus 'does not spread easily' via contaminated surfaces https://www.foxnews.com/health/cdc-now-says-coronavirus-does-not-spread-easily-via-contaminated-surfaces 20th May 2020.

The article links to the CDC article: How COVID-19 Spreads
, https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/how-covid-spreads.html.

The above mentioned Fox News article states, "Though it’s not exactly clear when, the federal health agency [Ravi: CDC] appears to have recently changed its guidelines from early March that simply said it “may be possible” to spread the virus from contaminated surfaces. The CDC now includes "surfaces or objects" under a section that details ways in which the coronavirus does not readily transmit."

Note that this does not mean that the virus does not transmit via contaminated surfaces - it probably does but it seems to be a less common way of human transmission. So one should NOT presume that one CANNOT get infected via a contaminated surface. One can but the probability is lower than probability of getting infected through close contact with an infected person.

Some extracts from the above mentioned CDC article are given below:

COVID-19 is thought to spread mainly through close contact from person-to-person. Some people without symptoms may be able to spread the virus. We are still learning about how the virus spreads and the severity of illness it causes.

Person-to-person spread
=================

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

* Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).

* Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks.

* These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

* COVID-19 may be spread by people who are not showing symptoms.

......

The virus does not spread easily in other ways
==============================

COVID-19 is a new disease and we are still learning about how it spreads. It may be possible for COVID-19 to spread in other ways, but these are not thought to be the main ways the virus spreads.

* From touching surfaces or objects. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes. This is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads, but we are still learning more about this virus.

--- end extract from CDC article ---

Ravi: Now I repeat that the article does NOT say that COVID-19 does NOT spread from touching contaminated surfaces and objects. It could spread that way too, but it is not the main way of spread which is close contact with infected person. And so disinfecting surfaces and objects is the good and safe thing to continue to do, to help prevent getting infected. Hand-washing regularly is also the good and safe thing to do.

Cambridge University Will Hold Its Lectures Online Next Year https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/19/world/europe/cambridge-university-coronavirus.html 19th May 2020

"Cambridge on Tuesday became the first British university to move all student lectures online for the coming academic year, underscoring the far-reaching changes the coronavirus is forcing on higher education institutions around the world."

Ravi: Hmm. Will the COVID-19 pandemic be the trigger that revolutionizes higher education across the world, making it more and more of Internet based education at significantly lower cost, and more flexibility for students? Online higher education was said to be poised to sweep the world a few years ago with MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) and online certification exams being promoted by top higher education institutions in the world (including in India), but that did not really happen.

Perhaps now there may be a big boost to online higher education which will help to make it a solid higher education medium in the future.

As India opens up for economic activity based on the zone the area is in (zones are green, orange, red or containment with containment having minimal activity), here are some tips about protecting oneself from coronavirus from Dr Sonu Goel, Professor at the Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health at Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/an-expert-explains-why-you-must-not-use-sanitisers-on-vegetables-and-fruit-6417332/, 19th May 2020.

Trump says he’s taking hydroxychloroquine, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1I9Bb8Fbui0, 4 min. 15 secs, published by ABC News on 18th May 2020.

Ravi: Hmm. Interesting!

Good to see US President Trump say so, openly!

Now I don't know whether Hydroxychloroquine will work as a preventative measure or not, against COVID-19. But I think it is good that President Trump has declared that he has been taking it for a week and a half or so, along with Zinc (and one dose of Azithromycin).

I support the freedom, the right for individuals to ask their doctors about it and take it if the doctor does not object. Trump said he told the White House doctor that he would like to take it and it seems that doctor has not objected.

These are some of the great aspects of US democracy. I mean, the guy is top boss of one of the most powerful states in the USA (which makes it as powerful as some powerful European countries). Okay, there is some grandstanding - but that's part of the game of democratic politics. There is also some exaggeration - he says that's the whole test! No - that's just the whole nasal swab sample collection! There is a complex RT-PCR test that has to be done on this sample. But a little bit of exaggeration is OK! I mean, he is not a scientist but the top boss of a powerful US state :-).

Ravi: I think this further relaxation in areas other than containment zones, is good. So the lockdown continues but with further relaxation, and with states seeming to have final say in detailed level implementation.

I think India has to learn to keep economic activities going while taking precautions against COVID-19 spread. Given the millions of poor in India, I think this is the sensible option. Economic activity gives a chance for these poor to earn some money and meet their living expenses.

[USA] Former Coronavirus Skeptic Warns Others To Take Pandemic Seriously After Infection,
Brian Lee Hitchens said he used to believe COVID-19 was a "fake crisis." Now he's imploring people to listen to the experts. https://www.huffingtonpost.in/entry/florida-man-brian-hitchens-coronavirus-warning_n_5ebdc05ac5b66da6b7d5754f, 15th May 2020

I read the original Facebook post of Brian Lee Hitchens, https://www.facebook.com/brianlee.hitchens/posts/3241584752540091, 13th May 2020, which is referred to in the above mentioned article. It comes across as a truthful account of a person (in Jupiter, Florida, USA) who initially thought that the virus could not infect him, and has now become wiser (after infection), and is advising others not to make the mistakes he did. I also saw the video interview linked in the post where one can see how genuinely he wants to warn others so that they do not go through what he had to go through.

Here's the concluding part of his above mentioned Facebook post: "This thing [Ravi: Coronavirus] is nothing to be messed with please listen to the authorities and heed the advice of the experts. We don't have to fear this and by heeding the advice doesn't mean that you fear it that means you're showing wisdom during this epidemic time. Looking back I should have wore a mask in the beginning but I didn't and perhaps I'm paying the price for it now but I know that if it was me that gave it to my wife I know that she forgives me and I know that God forgives me. Whether man forgives me or not that's out of my control but as long as I have the assurance that God forgives me and my wife forgives me I am good. So just think about what I said and if you have to go out please use wisdom and don't be foolish like I was so the same so the same thing won't happen to you like it happened to me and my wife."

May God bless Brian Lee Hitchens for this service he is rendering to society.

My prayers to God for healing both Brian Lee Hitchens and his wife (who is more seriously ill as per the article and post).

Trump also said the two countries were cooperating to develop a vaccine for the disease that has claimed more than 310,000 lives globally and infected 4.6 million people."

I have been to Juhu beach in Mumbai, many, many times during my Mumbai days, and have enjoyed it. But I have never seen it like this - it would always have people though some stretches of it from Andheri (W) side near ISKCON Juhu temple, towards the north would sometimes have less people at times. I have sat in such less crowded parts of Juhu and just watched the vastness of the Arabian sea and sort-of meditated on it. I always enjoyed such mediation and felt deeply at peace.

Well, going by this video, Juhu beach now can be a paradise for such meditation looking at the sea.

I am not saying that the Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) which is plaguing the world now, came from some Wuhan bioresearch lab. But neither am I willing to accept that it definitely did NOT come from a Wuhan bioresearch lab OR some other bioresearch lab. Note that it coming from a bioresearch lab. does not necessarily imply that it was genetically modified in that lab.

We don't know - that is, I think, the plain reality of the matter. And why we don't know? Because China has NOT allowed international independent experts to investigate the matter by visiting the Wuhan bioresearch labs and questioning people there, and also by visiting other places of interest in Wuhan.

Therefore, as a citizen and resident of India which has undergone great economic, physical and mental suffering due to this pandemic, I publicly support the call for China to allow an independent international investigation into the origin of this pandemic (which will involve China allowing the investigative teams to visit Wuhan bioresearch labs. and question staff there, and China fully co-operating with the investigation team).

But will this be a good thing for Wisconsin or not? That's something that I think will be closely followed. Let us see how this plays out in the coming weeks.

While the context of this debate is the USA, I think some aspects of it apply to the situation in other countries including India where the experts and political leaders are different and the nuances of the public health safety vs. suffering due to prolonged closure debate may be different from USA but at an overview level there is similarity.

Thanks --- for your valuable view. Browsed for Chris Christie saying what you referred to and got this relevant article: https://edition.cnn.com/2020/05/04/politics/chris-christie-coronavirus-deaths-reopening/index.html .

Very tough situation regarding opening up or not. But wearing a mask is another matter. In India, most of us just accept those instructions given the seriousness of the situation. But USA is a very different country. Quite a few Americans don't like being given instructions like these by the government!
------------------------

Developments about an incident in the state of Michigan, USA that I had mentioned in a previous post.

I think the police there have done a great job by seeking assistance of people on Facebook to identify the person, which paid off, following which they tracked the person down and arrested him. Hopefully he will learn from this and not repeat his actions. Further, I think this will send the right message to the community so that others don't do such stuff out of fear of police action like in this case.
--------------

I would like to add that I am not getting into whether the mask being mandatory is good or bad. All I am saying is that if somebody is asked to mask in a store by a clerk (or other staff) as those are the mandatory instructions of the store, that person has no right to do some mad thing like rubbing his nose on the shirt of the store staff who asked him to mask, and saying that that is his mask or something like that. That is horribly offensive behaviour towards the clerk/staff and I am putting up this post as my bit to call out such horribly offensive behaviour.

Informative article showing that 90% of people in this study who were positive, were going out of their homes for work.

It also covers the concerns some of the people in this area had about testing due to potential for government tracking, isolation and losing business if the area is designated as a hot-spot. I think there are similar issues among some people in Andhra Pradesh, India in areas which have many COVID-19 cases, and perhaps in areas with less or no cases too. Note that in Andhra Pradesh (and perhaps across India), any area where a resident tests COVID-19 positive is turned into a containment zone with strong restrictions on entry/exit and movement in the containment zone, and the person is isolated (typically taken to a COVID-19 treatment hospital). The close contacts of the person are quarantined.

Quite extraordinary how things are similar in these matters between advanced countries like USA in a major city like San Francisco and in hotspots in Andhra Pradesh, India. Note that both diagnostic nasal swab tests and antibody (finger-prick blood) tests are being done in Andhra Pradesh too, now. Extraordinary how Andhra Pradesh ramped up its testing within a month or so of realizing that it is being hit by the pandemic, and now does tests like in San Francisco, USA! That is a great achievement by the state of Andhra Pradesh,  IMHO.

I think this coronavirus pandemic is turning out to be a terrible but powerful equalizer.

(USA) Just outrageous behaviour! OK he did not want to wear a mask even if the instructions were that a mask has to be worn inside the store (and which was in line with the (Michigan) state governor's instructions). But to wipe his nose on a clerk's shirt and say that he will use that as a mask!!! I mean, that's crazy, and its caught on tape. The guy seems to have got arrested by the police.

There is a much more horrible and tragic case about mad reaction to being asked to wear a mask in Michigan and not being served when those instructions were not followed. As per this report, https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/michigan-security-guard-killed-police-investigating-if-it-was-over-n1199241, a security guard of a store instructed a woman to ensure that the woman's child wear a mask, and on which instruction not being obeyed, directed the store staff not to serve the woman. The woman got offended and brought her husband and son to the security guard. Some yelling ensued followed by one of the guys shooting the security guard with a gun and killing him!

Now the report does not share any video of the incident and so one will have to wait for the police investigation to reach some level of conclusion before one is reasonably certain of what happened. But a 43 year old security guard who is the father of eight children is dead! And it seems to be over instructions to wear a mask and not serving those who did not follow those instructions!! That's absolutely crazy to read, besides being very, very sad.

OK, people are losing it over this coronavirus pandemic. I understand that. Screaming or registering protest in some other fashion like overturning some store shelves is something that I could understand even if that could land the person into some police trouble. But shooting someone with a gun over this OR even wiping one's nose on a store clerk's shirt!! That's completely unacceptable.

Easing of the lockdown has brought to the fore, one of the realities of India. That reality is the love of liquor that many Indians have! Yes, that simply cannot be denied.

So which were the shops across the country which saw long lines today as the lockdown got eased (sometimes well before the shops opened)? Liquor shops, of course :-).

Poor chaps! They would have been kept away from their beloved peg/quarter for weeks. Naturally they want to celebrate easing of lockdown with a peg/quarter or some more :-).

Some medical stuff about COVID-19

Note that Pulse Oximeters are available in India too. A noted company, BPL, sells a Pulse Oximeter device with 2 years warranty for around Rs.2,600 on amazon.in: https://www.amazon.in/BPL-Medical-Technologies-Finger-Oximeter/dp/B07G45MZM7/ . I don't know how good this BPL device is. But I think I will consider buying it or similar device from another company, if courier deliveries to Puttaparthi are allowed.

The doctor also talks about respiratory rate. She says that normal respiratory rate for an adult is 12 to 20 respirations per minute. If you start to see respiratory rate of greater than 30 that's very concerning.

Small extracts from above article:
"Another thing to consider is how easy these particles are to inhale. In a recent computer model study, researchers found that people would most likely inhale aerosols from another person that is talking and coughing while sitting less than 6 feet away.
While this seems bad, the actual process from exposure to infection is a complicated numbers game. Often, viral particles found in aerosols are damaged. A study looking at the flu virus found that only 0.1% of viruses exhaled by a person are actually infectious. The coronavirus also starts to die off once it has left the body, remaining viable in the air for up to three hours. And of course, not every aerosol coming from an infected person will contain the coronavirus. There is a lot of chance involved."
"Wearing masks and social distancing reduce the risk of spreading or inhaling aerosols".

I think how Delhi, Mumbai and other metropolitan cities in India, all of which are designated red zones, handle the situation from tomorrow (4th May) when some relaxations will apply (even to red zones), will be closely watched by many in the country.

I think, like many other parts of the world, India has to learn to live with coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and associated COVID-19 disease. The lockdown in India from March 23rd is said to be the biggest lockdown in the world! The daily wage earner (labourer) / small business owner / shopkeeper / hawker who form the big majority of the working classes in India, have been the hardest hit financially and many of such persons are vulnerable financially without any significant financial reserves to protect them during a period of zero or much reduced earning.

So India has to open up for business and manufacturing (agricultural work has been permitted in a restricted way even during lockdown, I believe) allowing goods to be produced and sold, and allowing people to earn their livelihoods, but in a protected way, so as to keep new COVID-19 infections at manageable levels. How that can be done will be a great learning process at the central level and at state and local levels across the country.

What about suffering of the poor in India if complete lockdown continues beyond May 4th? Note that it has been relaxed from May 4th (tomorrow) even in red zones. It is only in containment zones (within red and orange zone urban/rural areas) that complete lockdown continues.
Are you saying that India's decision to relax lockdown from May 4th is wrong, and that it should continue lockdown as earlier?
...
The reality on the ground is that yes, enormous work has been done to provide free ration for the poor in India. I think that has been a great initiative from central and state governments. NGOs are also contributing but howsoever big an NGO may be, for a country with around 1.3 billion population with large number of below poverty line people, it is only the government that can do the big impact things like free ration (and even direct cash into accounts of poor).
But that's fine for a period like 5 to 6 weeks which has been the complete lockdown period in India (March 23rd to May 3rd).
To do it indefinitely may not be possible even for the government as government revenue has been drastically hit due to complete lockdown. I mean, money comes from producing goods (including agricultural goods like foodgrains) and rendering services, and government earns revenue through direct & indirect taxes on these goods & services.
And if government runs out of money, then it may not be able to supply free ration!!! Then the outcome can be very tricky! Lives may be lost due to malnutrition or worse!
So a balance has to be struck. One cannot have indefinite lockdown as even if that saves lives from COVID-19, lives may be lost due to other reasons like malnutrition and increased susceptibility to other diseases due to malnutrition.
This is my humble view on the matter based on my readings, viewings and observations of life under lockdown in India. There surely could be mistakes in my view of the matter. And so I am open to discussion and learning on this matter. Thanks.

A 30th April video (so few days old) whose initial part covers Sweden's approach of building herd immunity to coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) through letting people get infected (I think that excludes vulnerable people like old people and perhaps children too). Unfortunately Sweden lost a lot of the elderly to COVID-19 as compared to its neighbours - Norway, Denmark and Finland who did not go with Sweden's approach.

On the plus side, Sweden seems to have got closer to achieving herd immunity (without a vaccine).

The jury is still out on whether Sweden's approach is good or not as it will take more time to know that.

Shi Zhengli denies that the research work she led at Wuhan Institute of Virology on bat coronaviruses led to SARS-CoV-2 (virus associated with COVID-19 pandemic).

She must be heard.

I think many in the world just want to know the truth behind this pandemic and also have measures put in place to prevent any future pandemics coming out of some bio research lab.

I don't know how accurate Daily Telegraph Australia reports are. But perhaps some parts of the report given below are true.

Specifically it says that Australia (like USA), funded and collaborated on research work on bat coronaviruses in Wuhan Institute of Virology! Hmm.

The intention of such research surely must have been good - to help combat what was then potential coronavirus pandemics.

But was there an accident in the Wuhan lab (one of the two Wuhan labs to be precise) that let out the SARS-CoV-2 virus onto the general public in Wuhan, China, and from them to the whole world (including my country of India)? That is really the ****big***** question. The world must have an answer based on investigations by reliable international authorities who are given full access to whatever they need in the Wuhan labs and to personnel of the Wuhan labs.

Sensitive topic but India has suffered illness and death from COVID-19 and suffered enormous economic and social distress from lockdown due to COVID-19. So I am sharing this article from Times of India, a mainstream media outlet of India (and one which was my regular newspaper during my Mumbai student and later professional days).

I think this is the transcript of the White House briefing referred in the Times of India article: https://www.rev.com/blog/transcripts/white-house-press-secretary-kayleigh-mcenany-briefing-transcript-first-press-conference

I think this link has the video and transcript of this briefing (I have not had the time to check by viewing the video; hope to do that later and update this part of the post then): https://www.c-span.org/video/?471691-1/press-secretary-mcenany-holds-briefing-white-house

I think the White House press secretary McEnany has raised some valid points. I have given below some extracts of what the White House press secretary said (on 1st May 2020):

It’s no secret that China mishandled this situation. Just a few examples for you. They did not share the genetic sequence until a professor in Shanghai did so on his own. The very next day, China shut down his lab for quote “rectification”. They slow walked information on human-to-human transmission alongside the World Health Organization and didn’t let U.S. investigators in at a very important time. So, we take displeasure with China’s actions, but I certainly won’t get ahead of the president with those announcements.
...
[About USA Intelligence reports]
Let me remind everyone. Intelligence is just an estimate essentially, and it’s up to policymakers to decide what to do with that intelligence. In this case, the policymaker is the President of the United States, and he’ll make that decision at the right time.
...
Look, there’s no secret that China stopped us [Ravi: I think that should be US] investigators from coming in. It was of paramount importance that we got into China in an expedited fashion and that didn’t happen. With respect to the World Health Organization, they have some questions of their own to answer. The United States, as the president has emphasized, provides about 400 million to 500 million per year to the WHO, compared to China at roughly 40 million a year. But yet the WHO appears to have a very clear China bias. I mean, you look at this timeline and it’s really damning for the WHO when you consider the fact that on December 31st you had Taiwanese officials warning about human to human transmission, the WHO did not make that public. On January 9th the WHO repeated China’s claim that the virus, quote, does not transmit readily between people. That was quite apparently false.
...
On January 14th the WHO again repeated China’s talking points about human transmission, they praised China’s leadership on the 22nd of January, on the 23rd they said, and this is incredible, the pandemic didn’t represent a public health emergency of international concern. And even on February 29th you had the WHO was saying that when the coronavirus was spreading around the world, they chose to put, excuse me, political correctness first by opposing lifesaving travel restrictions.

This article seems to give good overview of relaxations (in India) from May 4th for red, orange and green zones with relaxation level increasing as one goes from red to orange to green.

https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/nationwide-lockdown-over-coronavirus-extended-for-two-weeks-beyond-may-4-2221782

Ravi: I think this is a good step. India needs to be open for business, but done in a phased manner, and done at different speed for different zones (green, orange and red).

I think now India is much better positioned to handle COVID-19 infections. We have significant numbers of  COVID-19 testing facilities, hospitals & wards and quarantine centers. The processes of containment and contact-tracing by govt. health and other (administrative) staff along with the police, implementation of lockdown/restrictions by the police including strict lockdown in containment zones, general awareness among public about infectiousness of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) / COVID-19 etc. and prevention measures the general public should take, is also at good levels, in many parts of the country. Further, in India at least, large percentage of these cases (80% seems to be the number being bandied about) are mild or asymptomatic.

I think the fear of COVID-19 in India has come down significantly from what it was in end March.

I think it is the lockdown from end March that was key to India being able to get some grip on this COVID-19 pandemic.

Yes, opening up may increase the cases in some locations. But I think the concerned local and state authorities would be in a much better position now (as compared to end March), to identify, isolate and contact-trace to contain the spread.

Lockdown is extended from May 4th for 2 weeks. But there is some easing of restrictions for districts in green and orange zones - less easing in orange and more easing in green zones. Further, it seems that some easing is being done even in red zones - see https://news.abplive.com/news/india/lockdown-extension-list-of-services-allowed-after-may-4-coronavirus-cases-in-india-covid-19-1210602. I think the proper picture will emerge a day or two after May 4th as the new rules come into play.

Anantapur district is listed in orange zone!

So that means Anantapur district ***may*** (I repeat, may, as I think ultimate decision would rest with state govt. and district authorities) have some easing of lockdown after May 4th.
----------------------------------------------

I think this is a good move. Let those who want to return home across states, get back home. Some of these people who are stuck in states they migrated to for work, don't have much money as they are jobless now. It is over a month now since the lockdown started, and so I can understand how badly some of them will want to go back to their home towns & villages.
